Malta and the arts- they go hand in hand. This tiny island is packed with local talent and attracts musical acts from around the world. The following are a few well-known acts to follow this year- trust me, they will knock your socks off.
1. Rotting Christ- 23rd September 2017
This gig will be held at the new and highly raved about “The Garage”, Zebbug. Rotting Christ is a Greek extreme death metal/grind band, formed in 1987. The current band members are the original; Jim (bass) and the brothers Sakis (vocals, guitar) and Themis on drums. They are predominantly known for their ground-breaking album Passage to Arcturo and have toured and performed in festivals all over the world, including Wacken Open Air in Germany, 2003. They are currently working on another album, set to release in 2018.
2. Black Sabbath; The End of the End, 28th September 2017
If you haven’t had the privilege of watching Black Sabbath live (born in the wrong decade?), don’t miss out on the chance of watching their performance at the Eden Cinemas. It won’t be live, but it will sure feel like it. Black Sabbath was an English rock band, formed in Birmingham in 1968- the golden age of rock- by guitarist/ songwriter Tony Iommi, bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler, drummer Bill Ward and the notorious Ozzy Osbourne. They are famous for ultra-catchy, expertly crafted hits like “Crazy Train”, “Iron Man”, and of course “Paranoid”. Rock fan or not, this will be an experience to remember, all in the comfort of a cinema.
3. The Hives, 29th September 2017
This Swedish rock band made a name for themselves in the early 2000s, through the release of their album Veni Vidi Vicious, home to their number 1 hit “Hate to Say I Told You So”. This was followed by albums such as Tyrannosaurus Hives, The Black and White Album and Lex Hives. They have also collaborated with music legends such as music producer Timbaland, in his hit song “Throw It on Me”. An act not to be missed!
4. Rockestra, 30th September 2017
A true slice of local talent- Rockestra covers rock ballads and hits immaculately, making it a spectacular show for both adults and children. Directed and performed by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at the MFCC Ta’ Qali, organised by the Malta Community Chest Fund to raise money for those in need, there is absolutely no reason why you should not attend. Expect glitter, confetti, lights, and of course, real Maltese talent.
5. Lacuna Coil, 10th November 2017
Lacuna Coil is a gothic metal/alternative metal band from Milan, Italy- one of Italy’s most successful rock and roll exports to date. Formed in 1994, the band was formerly known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal. Its main focus is on the contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies that help create a melodic, detached sound. The band's 2012 release, Dark Adrenaline, peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200. They have toured internationally and were nominated for an MTV Music Award. This show will definitely be a nostalgic trip to the past!
6. Boyce Avenue, 11th November 2017
Held in the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, this is the one show you don’t want to miss. Boyce Avenue was formed in Florida, by brothers Alejandro Luis Manzano, Daniel Enrique Manzano, and Fabian Rafael Manzano. The band is named after a combination of two streets the brothers lived on as children. They rose to fame through videos of acoustic covers of original songs displayed on youtube, solo or even in collaboration with other popular artists such as Megan Nicole and Hannah Trigwell. Even though they are best known for their covers, their debut album entitled All We Have Left contained original music, including lead singles such are “Every Breath”, “On My Way” and “Broken Angels”. Boyce Avenue has since racked up over 3.3 billion views on Youtube and garnered over 9.8 million fans and subscribers. Ideal for hardcore fans or for those who want to try something new.
