It’s easy to get trapped into a routine with no exercise in it. It’s only February, and you might be one of the hundreds of people who already have new-year-resolution gym membership cards that are gathering dust.
We’re not judging. Having to juggle between work and your busy life outside it can make you lose sight of the treadmill. In addition to this, when you spend time in another country, the last thing you’re likely to think about is working out – with all the places to see and all the foods to try, you might quickly find your waistline expanding.
The Vodafone Malta Marathon, an annual event, gives you the opportunity to exercise with a greater purpose in mind, so it’s time to shed your excuses (and possibly a few pounds while you’re at it).
This year, all the proceeds collected through the marathon will go the Inspire Foundation, a charity which works with people who suffer from Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and various other disabilities.
If you’re more interested in the competitive edge, you’re in luck too, as an award ceremony is hosted on the same day at 8.30 pm at Le Méridien, St Julians Hotel amp; Spa. Winning categories include 1st 3 Men, 1st 3 Ladies, 1st 3 Male Teams, and 1st 3 Female teams.
If you’re up for the good deed, the Vodafone Malta Marathon is happening on the 5th of March this year. People are still in time to participate, as applications close on the 19th of February. That’s only a few days away, so don’t take too long to decide! Keep in mind that you need to be at least 18 to take part in the full marathon and at least 17 to take part in the half marathon.
If you’re not really up to the full marathon, you can opt instead to take part in a Half Marathon or a Walkathon (which is technically part of the Half Marathon, but walking participants must remain behind the joggers/runners), which are both happening on the same day.
All three variations of the marathon begin in Mdina, but whereas the full marathon starts at 7.30 am, the other two commence at 9.30 am. If you want to know what the exact difference between the full and half marathons is, the time limit for the former is 5.5 hours, while the half marathon lasts for only 3 hours and 45 minutes. The full marathon amounts to a 42.195km route while the half marathon totals to 21.097km.
The organisers have chosen to keep the same routes used last year. Funnily enough, regardless of whether you take on the full or half marathon, the route will start in Mdina and end in Sliema, but the full marathon will cover a wider area in between.
