Malta’s sister island, Gozo, is so beautiful that Maltesers and tourists alike love to escape there for weekend breaks or day trips to enjoy its idyllic beaches and laid-back vibe. No trip to Malta is complete without spending at least a day in Gozo, so here are just 6 things to help get you started on your Gozitan adventure!
1 | Swim at Ramla l-Hamra
Ramla l-Hamra (‘The Red Sandy Beach’) is a gorgeous stretch of beach located on the north-eastern side of the island. Be sure to take an umbrella and layer on the sunblock, because you won’t want to leave this slice of paradise.
2 | Eat (and drink) Well
Gozo may be even smaller than Malta, but make no mistake - it’s BIG on food. We could list loads of must-try restaurants and eateries dotted around the island, but here are a few top picks that’ll have you covered when you get hungry: It-Tmun, Ta’ Karolina, Maxokk, Country Terrace, La Stanza, and The Boat House.
3 | Visit Ta’ Pinu
Known to locals simply as ‘Ta’ Pinu’, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu (say that fast, ten times) is an enchanting minor basilica and shrine that becomes all the more magical around sunset.
4 | Snap some photos around Dwejra
Even without the awe-inspiring Azure Window standing tall, Dwejra is still totally worth a visit! Take in the rugged landscapes and watch the waves roll against the time-worn rocks before you walk down to enjoy a drink at one of the quaint, colourful little bars by the inland sea.
5 | Take a Jeep Tour
If you want to see as much as possible in one action-packed day, then why not take a jeep tour of Gozo?
This is probably the best and most effective way to discover some of the island’s most breath-taking sights, with plenty of time to snap as many photos as you like.
6 | Wander around Cittadella
The Cittadella is a regal walled city that watches over Victoria and offers some truly unbeatable views. Walk through the city gate and step back in time as you explore this gorgeous piece of Gozitan history, and end your visit with a chilled drink at Café San Martino.
